Wanderlust & Whales

Cradled between fynbos-covered mountains and the blue tides of Walker Bay, where whales break water, Hermanus indulges wanderers and connoisseurs alike. Days in the coastal town are filled with ocean vistas, sandy beaches, scenic hikes, and vibrant streets lined with galleries and restaurants. Afterward, recharge in the comfort of Hermanus Boutique Guest House – your haven on the Whale Coast.

Where is Hermanus Located?

Hermanus – located on the south coast of South Africa’s Western Cape province – is approximately 120 kilometres from Cape Town.

A 90-minute drive from the Mother City will get you to our pristine coastal town. If you would rather take the scenic route, Clarence Drive (R44) is the way to go. The drive is just over two hours, but worth every extra second.

The geographical location of Hermanus provides sea views and whales to the one side and mountainous winelands to the other. This is just one of the reasons why our fisherman’s village turned luxury holiday destination should be part of every itinerary.

Whale Watching in Hermanus

Every year, between July and November, southern right whales migrate from Antarctica to South Africa’s waters, where they mate, calve and raise their young.
During this time, Hermanus becomes a bustling destination as wildlife enthusiasts from across the globe flock here to catch a glimpse of the whales. With the Whale Crier announcing sightings, you won’t miss a beat.
Land-based whale watching is a popular activity, especially from the vantage point of the cliff path winding past Hermanus Boutique Guest House. So, pack your binoculars!
If an up-close whale encounter has always been on your bucket list, be sure to enquire about whale-watching boat tours in the area.

Hermanus Golf Experiences

Golf in Hermanus is an experience in itself. Play your way through 27 holes of spectacular scenery and thoughtfully designed fairways at the Hermanus Golf Club.

From tee off in the morning to whale watching in the afternoon and enjoying drinks at sundown, our coastal town offers luxury on all fronts. When it is time to retire for the night, Hermanus Boutique Guest House rewards you with unmatched comfort.

Hermanus Beaches

Relax with your toes in the sand at any of Hermanus’ lively beaches. With so many sandy spots along the shore to bask and bathe, there is something for everyone.

Grotto Beach is our top recommendation for beach days filled with swimming and sunbathing. As the largest beach in the area, it boasts spectacular scenery, two designated lifeguard zones, and a lively atmosphere that makes it a favourite among visitors.

Sandbaai Main Beach treats beachgoers to exciting tidal pools filled with marine life, ideal for cold plunges or snorkelling during high tide.

Voëlklip Beach is another popular location for swimming. With an intimate sandy stretch alongside a grassy lawn, it’s perfect for picnicking too. Both Sandbaai and Voëlklip beaches have lifeguards on duty.

Favoured by locals, Langbaai offers the most seclusion, and its waves are ideal for surfing. Its neighbouring beach, Kammabaai, is also on the secluded side, but is more accessible than Langbaai.

So, whether it’s swimming, surfing, or taking a stroll that tickles your fancy, Hermanus has a beach for it.

Marine Adventures

Beyond whale watching, Hermanus offers a host of thrilling marine adventures.

Ocean safaris bring you up close to the Marine Big 5, which includes whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, and the endangered African penguin.

For an unforgettable adrenalin rush, test the waters with shark cage diving. Safely enclosed within a cage and submerged in the Atlantic Ocean, you could come face-to-face with powerful predators in their natural habitat.
